Goal
Can you define the business outcome?
A campaign aimed at form fills will find form fills. One aimed at qualified opportunities behaves differently.
GO Ads Academy · Guardian Owl Digital · Louisville
Launching a campaign is easy. Knowing whether Google is spending your money well is harder.
Take the five minute GO Ads Academy assessment. We will test the decisions that matter before you put another dollar into Search.
Why this matters
Opening an account takes an afternoon. Google will suggest your keywords, write your ads and propose a budget. The difficult questions come after launch, and they decide whether the money is working.
An active Google Ads account is not an advertising strategy.
That is what this assessment tests.
The assessment
Each question is a situation that comes up in a working Google Ads account. Choose what you would actually do. Your result appears as soon as you finish, with no email required.
Question 1 of 5
Form volume is a platform number. Qualified opportunities and revenue are the business number, and a campaign can only optimize toward what you feed it.
Irrelevant searches waste budget before any bidding decision matters. The search terms report and negative keywords come first.
Optimization score is not a business outcome. More budget only helps if the extra spend buys profitable business you would not have won anyway.
| Metric | Campaign A | Campaign B |
|---|---|---|
| Clicks | 500 | 300 |
| Leads | 50 | 25 |
| Customers | 5 | 10 |
Clicks are not customers, and customer counts are not profit. Customer value, acquisition cost and margin decide which campaign is better.
When results drop, diagnose before you spend. Demand, search terms, tracking, the landing page and the auction can each explain it, and each has a different fix.
Your result
DIY Ready
You understand the difference between platform activity and business performance. For a relatively simple account, DIY may make sense.
Keep ownership of the account and use a disciplined monthly review process.
DIY With Guardrails
Your fundamentals are there, but gaps in measurement, search intent, or optimization could become costly as spend increases.
Keep ownership of the account and add periodic expert review.
Get a Second Set of Eyes
You can launch campaigns. The bigger risk is knowing whether the traffic, conversions, and recommendations are actually helping the business.
Review the account before increasing spend.
You may be optimizing toward leads that never become customers. Start by connecting CRM outcomes back to the campaigns that produced them.
You may be paying for searches that will never buy. Start with the search terms report and a maintained negative keyword list.
Google’s recommendations may be steering your spend. Judge each one against profit, not against optimization score.
The account can look healthy inside Google and still lose money for the business. Start with customer value, margin and cost per customer.
When performance changes, the fix may be aimed at the wrong cause. Diagnose demand, tracking and the landing page before changing budget or keywords.
You chose the strongest answer on every question. The readout covers what to keep watching as spend grows.

What the assessment measures
The platform reports activity. Whether that activity is good for the business is a judgment you have to bring.
Goal
A campaign aimed at form fills will find form fills. One aimed at qualified opportunities behaves differently.
Intent
Keywords are what you bid on. The search terms report shows what you actually paid for.
Measurement
Leads are not necessarily qualified leads. Automation is only as good as the conversion data it learns from.
Judgment
Recommendations should be evaluated, not applied by default. Optimization score is not a business outcome.
Economics
Clicks are not customers. Customer value and margin decide whether advertising is working.

Questions
Yes, many business owners can run Google Ads themselves, especially with one service, one location and a modest budget. Launching a campaign is the easy part. The harder part is judging whether the spend produces qualified leads and profitable customers, not just clicks. If you can connect conversions to revenue, review search terms regularly and evaluate Google’s recommendations critically, managing it yourself is realistic.
The interface is not the difficult part. Google Ads gets difficult when decisions depend on judgment: which searches to exclude, which bidding strategy fits the goal, whether a recommendation serves the business or only raises spend, and why performance changed. A simple account with clean conversion tracking is manageable for a disciplined owner. Multiple services, locations or long sales cycles usually call for more experience.
Consider outside help when spend is rising and you cannot say which campaigns produce qualified leads or customers, when conversion tracking counts form fills or clicks rather than real opportunities, when performance drops and the cause is unclear, or when nobody has time to review search terms and recommendations each week. A one time account review is often a sensible first step before handing over management.
Google Ads is working when it produces customers at a cost the business can sustain. Clicks, impressions and optimization score do not prove that. Track the conversions that matter, such as qualified leads, booked calls or sales, and connect them to revenue in your CRM. Then compare cost per qualified lead and cost per customer against what a customer is worth after margin.
No. Recommendations are suggestions generated by the platform, and many of them increase spend or reach without regard to your margins. Auto applying them lets Google change budgets, keywords and bidding without your review. Evaluate each one against a business question: is this likely to produce profitable incremental customers? Some recommendations are useful. Accept them deliberately. A higher optimization score is not a business outcome.
Broad match is not inherently bad, but it is risky without strong inputs. It lets Google match your ads to a wide range of related searches, and it works best alongside Smart Bidding, accurate conversion tracking and enough conversion volume to learn from. Without those, it often buys irrelevant traffic. If you use broad match, review search terms frequently and maintain a solid negative keyword list.
