ChatGPT Atlas is arguably the most-high-profile dedicated A.I. browser released so far. What should business owners know about it?
The Five Most-Key Takeaways from This Blog Post
- ChatGPT Atlas is like a browser with ChatGPT integrated into it. You can chat with it to get answers (with cited sources) to questions. You can also just go to a regular search engine like Google in the browser for when you do not want to use the answer engine.
- Another key feature common to other A.I. browsers as well as browsers like Microsoft Edge, which has a Copilot model on standby to answer questions for users, is being able to use the A.I. to answer questions about what is on a page. In some cases, this can save users from having to open another tab to independently search for information.
- A fair criticism of this browser, and other A.I. browsers, is that much of the time it kind of just feels like using a classic browser like Google Chrome, just with an A.I. chatbot being the start page.
- If you are the type with privacy concerns, do note that ChatGPT can see what is on your active browser tab.
- Agentic capabilities like managing tabs and navigating pages are another draw for users interested in A.I. that can use the Internet for them.
The Significance for Business Owners
A.I. will be changing search, whether you are ready for it or not.
ChatGPT Atlas could be an important mark in the history of search, given how well-known ChatGPT is at this point.
Given that a tenth of the world’s adult population are users of ChatGPT, that could tee up OpenAI nicely to getting a significant chunk of these hundreds of millions of users to migrate to ChatGPT Atlas.
As of this writing, the stats on how many people are using this browser are not available to the general public.
But think of it this way: there are over 800 million users of ChatGPT, so if even a single-digit percentage of that user base is using ChatGPT Atlas, that can still be millions of people.
How to Reach Customers with ChatGPT Atlas
So a business owner should be thinking about how to reach users using this browser, and browsers like this (The Browser Company’s Dia and Perplexity’s Comet are notable examples).
Part of that entails getting into A.E.O., sometimes referred to as A.I.O., where you need to tailor content to A.I. searching the web for users.
ChatGPT Atlas will still cite sources when it offers answers, so your business’s website has a chance of getting cited.
Practical advice here includes offering direct answers to searched-for questions.
Another tip is to keep in mind that these are conversational-computing platforms that people are using, so you can benefit from having a conversational tone in your content.
From an S.E.O. angle, think of A.E.O. of evolving past simple short simple keywords and into more-specific key phrases and longer sentences that may be relevant to the more-specific searches that people can perform with chatbots.
Agentic Search with ChatGPT Atlas
If you have not checked out ChatGPT Atlas, then you can get a sense of it by reading this section. However, the writer of this blog post recommends checking it out for yourself, even to just to experiment a bit with it to see how A.I. is changing the search experience as we know it.
However, agentic search in the form of giving ChatGPT the reins is notable. It should be worth saying that as of right now there are some limits to what you can have ChatGPT Atlas do.
It will not download .exe files or install software, access sensitive info like banking accounts and passwords and private messages, make purchases or financial transactions, and more.
Worth mentioning is that this may not be the case for long. Perplexity is more aggressive when it comes to agentic search, letting Pro subscribers have A.I. use credit-card info to make purchases on behalf of the user—with permission from the user.
OpenAI has been experimenting with this, but not on a wide scale. When in early 2025 Operator began to roll out to select users, those users could have the agent make purchases.
